Sheffield Wednesday had a mixed summer transfer window. And with the Owls still rooted to the foot of the table, January will be crucial.
Sheffield Wednesday signed a number of new players in the summer. But it wasn’t easy with the club having had no recruitment chief for a number of months, and having a prolonged managerial search in the summer too.
Xisco Munoz was the man in charge, but who actually oversaw the club’s recruitment remains something of a mystery, with the Owls putting together a relatively poor transfer window, with a couple of seemingly random signings.
There’s been a few decent additions for the club. One glaring error though was the club’s lack of loan signings; Wednesday signed John Buckley and Jeff Hendrick on loan on deadline day, but neither have really prevailed.
Clubs in the Championship often thrive on loaning young and exciting players from the Premier League, but Wednesday; perhaps because of their poor form and because they had a poor coach and tactician in Munoz at the helm during the summer window, didn’t manager to land any Premier League gems.
But will Rohl change that?
In four games in charge, Rohl has overseen three defeats and one win.
But the changes are evident. Rohl is clearly a much better tactician than Munoz with Wednesday playing much better football, and much more positively as they vie to put some points on the board.
Expect the German to be keen on further adding his own stamp on the side in January, and with him in charge, Sheffield Wednesday will no doubt be a much more attractive place for clubs to send their players on loan.
Premier League clubs may view a loan move under Rohl as ideal for some of their emerging youngsters given Rohl’s contemporary ideas and more positive philosophy, which should give Wednesday a timely boost in the winter transfer window.
And with Wednesday not looking like they’ll have much, if any resources for transfers in January, they may be reliant on loan signings in a bid to save their season.
