Sheffield Wednesday are looking to hit double figures in the summer transfer window soon.
After failing to land Saint-Etienne defender Mickael Nade, the Owls will continue their transfer raid to build a team capable of a top half finish in the Championship.
While they have already strengthened in every area on the pitch, Danny Rohl has now admitted that he wants to add more centre-backs and midfielders to his squad.
Rohl’s defensive options going into the new season are Bambo Diaby, Akin Famewo, Michael Ihiekwe, Liam Palmer and Dominic Iorfa, while Di’Shon Bernard is still on contract talks with the club.
While Wednesday do have plenty of options, whether they are at the level required to be in the starting line-up is another question.
Bernard will undoubtedly be in the team if he extends his stay at Hillsborough, but the other one or two centre-back spots could be up for debate.
Snapping up a defender from the Premier League proved successful when they signed Bernard last summer and it could be a brilliant idea to swoop in for another top flight youngster this time round.
Sheffield Wednesday should target Man City gem
Instead of looking to a free transfer, the Owls should consider joining the race to sign Callum Doyle on loan.
The 20-year-old has been at Manchester City since he was a child but is yet to make an appearance for them, spending the last three seasons out on loan.
He made his debut for Sunderland at 17 years old and went onto make 39 appearances as they won promotion from League One.
Next up was Coventry City, where he was a main stay in their backline as they reached the play-off final.
Doyle then earned himself another loan move to relegated side Leicester City, where he began as a regular before suffering an injury that resulted in him struggling to get back into the team.
BBC Sport have reported that the youngster is now wanted by Norwich and could be on track for his third promotion by the age of 21 if he was to move to Carrow Road.
Callum Doyle has already proved himself in the Championship
Doyle clearly has bags of talent and already has plenty of experience in the Championship despite his age.
The defender adds youth and some pace to the backline and it comes as no surprise that clubs have continued to target him every summer – but not yet Wednesday.
The Owls have already signed so many players and Dejphon Chansiri has showed his willingness to open his wallet, but has so far only made one loan signing.
Doyle should look at the success has had so far in Yorkshire and the impact he has made on younger players such as James Beadle.
While he may attract interest from clubs higher up in the league, Wednesday could be the perfect place for him to get regular football and further confirm his brilliant reputation.
There’s certainly no harm in trying from Wednesday’s point of view, with Doyle likely to move to the second division this summer either way.
