Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a move to sign Axel Werner during the summer transfer window. Although he’s an unknown quantity of sorts, it’s a move that could prove an important and useful one for Xisco Munoz.

It’s fair to say that Wednesday are in need of a new goalkeeper. David Stockdale departed Hillsborough in the summer and that leaves Cameron Dawson as the club’s only senior stopper at the moment.

The Sheffield-born promotion-winner could well start the new season as the number-one goalkeeper. However, it’s always healthy to have some rivalry for the shirt between the posts.

Werner could be capable of doing that. In 2018, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone claimed he had a lot of faith in the player when he was on the books with the Spanish outfit.

Aged 27, Werner now simply needs to go somewhere and play regular football. Although that’s not something which would be guaranteed at Wednesday, he would have a very good chance in competition with Dawson.

Wednesday-linked Werner has been at some big clubs during his career. He’s largely been a number two but he’s been on the books with Atletico Madrid, Boca Juniors, Elche, Malaga and a number of clubs in Argentina.

During the 2022/23 campaign, he was with Elche and made two appearances in La Liga. He was released at the end of the season and is now looking for a new club.

Wednesday linked with a move to sign Werner and it could be ideal

One thing that Werner will have is fire in his belly. He will be desperately seeking regular game time, having spent so much of his career playing as a backup option.

Dawson was brilliant during Wednesday’s promotion season. However, Munoz will want another senior goalkeeper and the ball really would be in Werner’s court if he signed.

Wednesday could do a lot worse than sign Werner. He wouldn’t cost the club a transfer fee and he’d work extremely hard to wrangle the gloves away from Dawson ahead of the first game.
