Sheffield Wednesday are interested in a move for free agent goalkeeper Axel Werner, according to reports (via The Star).
Werner, 27, is a free agent after being released by Spanish side Elche at the end of last season. The 6ft 4in shot-stopper was previously at Atletico Madrid for five years but in that time, he managed just one league appearance for the club.
He racked up three total appearances for the club, making his debut in a Europa League clash v Lokomotiv Moscow in 2018. The game ended in a 3-0 win for Atletico and Diego Simeone held praise for Werner after the game, saying that the Argentine has a ‘bright future’ in the game.
Sheffield Wednesday’s sole signing of the summer so far is Reece James who’s joined on a permanent deal from Blackpool after his impressive loan spell last season.
But expect new boss Xisco Munoz to be eyeing up a number of player signigns this summer, with a new goalkeeper looking like a priority with Cameron Dawson the only senior shot-stopper in the first-team.
Werner on his way to Wednesday?
It’s certainly a quite random link, and as per The Star, Sheffield Wednesday aren’t the only side interested – Crystal Palace are also in this transfer chase.
But Munoz needs another goalkeeper at least in this summer’s transfer window and the Owls are more than likely to be limited to free and loan signings, so the link makes sense.
Werner has had a tough time over the past few years. He’s barely played and so he’ll surely have a point to prove, and there’s fewer leagues better to do that than the English leagues.
It could take time for him to adapt to the English game but Munoz would no doubt be able to help him settle in given the Spanish link.
An exciting rumour and one that could be worth keeping an eye on over the next few weeks.
