Sheffield Wednesday given clear run at ‘magnificent’ striker, he’ll cost nothing

Sheffield Wednesday missed out on signing a new striker on deadline day. But the Owls may still bring someone in.

Sheffield Wednesday capped a disappointing January transfer window with the last minute signings of Kristian Pedersen and Ian Poveda.

The pair joined on loan from Swansea City and Leeds United respectively and whilst Poveda may come good, Pedersen has already failed to impress.

Danny Rohl desperately needed a new striker on deadline day. Duncan McGuire was linked but he eventually joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, though that deal might yet fall through owing to a paperwork error from Rovers.

It looked, and still looks like Wednesday will have to do with what they’ve got until the summer. But one potential option is Dwight Gayle.

Dwight Gayle remains a free agent

Gayle mutually agreed to leave Stoke City on deadline day. Soon after, Fabrizio Romano said that all of Barnsley, Charlton Athletic, Derby County, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday were keen.

Links to Gayle have been somewhat cold since, though Derby County have been linked much more than most.

Rams fans were going into a social media frenzy after they thought they spotted Gayle’s car around Pride Park, though it’s since been revealed that Gayle is not an immediate target for Paul Warne’s side.

And that may have left the door open for Sheffield Wednesday to swoop in for the 34-year-old, once described as ‘magnificent’ by Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.

Sheffield Wednesday can’t be choosers right now

The age old saying; beggars can’t be choosers, largely applies to Sheffield Wednesday in this current predicament.

Their poor January transfer window has been followed up by some woeful performances and a newfound anger among fans aimed at owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Relegation now looks like the likeliest outcome this season and so Rohl has to do whatever he can to give the club a fighting chance.

Gayle, whilst 34 now and coming off the back of a pretty uninspiring spell with Stoke City, in which he scored three league goals in a season-and-a-half, remains an experienced pro.

He has 106 career goals to his name with 62 of those coming in the Championship; he scored 24 of those in the 2018/19 season under Darren Moore at West Brom.

His best may yet be behind him. But if he can come in and score a handful of goals, that could equate to a handful of points, and those points could determine whether or not Sheffield Wednesday go down this season.
