He joined Sheffield Wednesday for more playing time but Danny Rohl is refusing to pick him

One Sheffield Wednesday player is likely to already be regretting his decision to move to Hillsborough amid struggles for playing time.

After narrowly avoiding relegation in the 2023/24 season, Danny Rohl was keen to strengthen his squad over the summer to ensure his side did not face a similar problem this time around.

11 new players were brought to Hillsborough in the most recent transfer window, some of which have fared better than others.

Following a successful loan spell last term, Ike Ugbo is now the second-worst player in the Championship this season after returning to Yorkshire on a permanent basis.

On a more positive note, Yan Valery was the difference-maker for Sheffield Wednesday vs Portsmouth recently.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday fans are yet to see too much of free-agent signing Nathaniel Chalobah after he made the move from West Bromwich Albion.

Rohl recently confirmed Chalobah could return this month after picking up a muscle injury that has limited his playing time.

Charlie McNeill struggling for game time at Sheffield Wednesday

But while the midfielder has been kept out due to injury, Charlie McNeill is finding minutes hard to come by at Wednesday due to no fault of his own.

The 21-year-old signed on a free transfer from Manchester United over the summer and was likely expecting to play on a more regular basis after failing to break in at Old Trafford.

However, despite Rohl dubbing McNeill ‘clinical’ after his Owls’ debut back in August, the Sheffield Wednesday manager is now refusing to start the forward.

The ex-Red Devil is yet to make an appearance in the Championship this term and has only made the matchday squad on three occasions.

McNeill’s only minutes in 2024/25 so far have come in the Carabao Cup, but even in that competition, he has only notched 123 minutes of action across three games.

Charlie McNeill may already be questioning Sheffield Wednesday future

Now, with three months of the 2024/25 campaign gone, it is fair to assume McNeill may already be questioning his future at the club.

If Wednesday were in excellent form and there was little room for Rohl to make changes, McNeill’s exile would make some sense.

However, the Yorkshire outfit have had a very mixed 2024/25 so far and their centre-forwards are struggling.

As mentioned above, Ugbo has been far from his best since returning to the club and Michael Smith is past his prime.

Yet Rohl refuses to give McNeill a chance up front, not even from the bench. It is a frustrating situation for the youngster and may see him look for a temporary or even permanent exit in January.
