Fresh Sheffield Wednesday points deduction is actually a blessing in disguise

When 2025/26 draws to a close, Wednesday will look back on it with bittersweet memories.

The negative will be that Wednesday will likely be relegated with a record low points total, but the positive is that Dejphon Chansiri will be out of sight and out of mind.

Wednesday were hit with another points deduction on Monday, taking the points total for the season to -10, and relegation will be confirmed at some point in the coming months.

There are exciting times to look forward to with the Wednesday administrators set to name a preferred bidder in the next week or so.

Latest points deduction could be a blessing in disguise for Wednesday

Losing points has become the norm this season for Wednesday, but the overriding feeling now is that they’re consigned to the history books for the foreseeable future.

With a takeover set to ramp up in the coming weeks, Wednesday have all of a sudden become a more attractive proposition given that there will be no points deductions to come in League One next season.

The Owls starting next season on zero points will be a huge plus for the club, given what they’ve been through this season, and players will want to sign for the club in the summer.

A transfer fee restriction was also placed on Wednesday until 2027, but yesterday, the EFL confirmed that it will cease in January, with the club now glad to see the back of Chansiri.

This means that a clear transfer plan can be put in place by the new owners, ready to make an assault on the third tier in 2026/27.

There is finally light at the end of the tunnel for Wednesday

It’s not easy being a Wednesday fan at the moment, and on Saturday, a 3-2 defeat to Preston highlighted where the issues will be on the pitch.

Wednesday just don’t have the strength in depth to compete in this division, and although the fight is evident from the players, it’s not enough.

The quicker the takeover can happen, the better, and it’s definitely positive that prospective buyers have started to be shown around Hillsborough and the club’s Middlewood Road training ground.

It might not feel like it right now but there are definitely reasons to be somewhat more cheerful for Wednesday following yesterday’s update from the EFL.
