It’s been a difficult start to life at Sheffield Wednesday for Danny Rohl. But fans have definitely seen some improvement.
Improving upon Xisco Munoz’s start to the season wasn’t difficult for Rohl. The German has made some clear and precise changes to the style and philosophy and the Owls have looked much better.
But it remains a mammoth task for Wednesday and Rohl this season.
Their last defeat vs Millwall highlighted the challenges facing the club this season with their summer recruitment becoming evidently poorer as the campaign goes on.
Having said that, there’s some long-standing Sheffield Wednesday players who aren’t performing at their best this year, with one being Cameron Dawson.
Millwall horror show…
The performance vs Millwall was a poor one all round. But Dawson struggled in particular with the 28-year-old was at fault for at least one of the goals and he failed to make any outstanding saves.
Joe Crann rated his performance on the day a 4/10, adding:
“A really tough day at the office for the Wednesday goalkeeper, who will be disheartened by the result at S6. It was after his somewhat fumbled effort that Harding scored the third and he didn’t really manage to make any notable saves.”
Dawson has started every game since Munoz’s exit. He was reinstated by Neil Thompson for the goalless draw vs Huddersfield Town last month and Rohl has so far picked him ahead of summer signing Deviz Vasquez.
But there’s a growing number of Sheffield Wednesday fans online who think Vasquez should be brought back into the XI.
Dawson vs Vasquez…
Dawson has made seven Championship appearances this season compared to Vasquez’s nine. Dawson has conceded 10 and kept two clean sheets whilst Vasquez has conceded 15 and kept one clean sheet.
But those numbers don’t do Vasquez much justice; in games against Leeds United and Ipswich Town in particular, Vasquez showcased some unbelievable shot-stopping skills to keep his side in both games.
And many would argue that Vasquez would be better suited to playing out from the back than Dawson, which is a philosophy that the Sheffield Wednesday boss wants to implement in whatever capacity the players can manage.
There’s problem positions all over the position. Wednesday seem to have had an unstable no.1 position for some time now and whilst Rohl will be keen to keep one player in place and build some kind of consistency, Vasquez was perhaps unfairly dropped in the first place, and with Dawson not impressing, the Colombian deserves to start the next game vs Birmingham City.
