Sheffield Wednesday fell to yet another defeat on Saturday, losing 4-0 at home to Millwall in the Championship.
Sheffield Wednesday were two goals behind at the break and conceded another two after half time to eventually lose the game heavily.
Danny Rohl has now lost four of his opening five games in charge; with nine goals conceded and just two scored, with both of them coming in the 2-0 win over Rotherham United.
The performance vs Millwall though was perhaps the worst under Rohl yet, with many poor individual performances on the day.
And after the game, The Star reporter Joe Crann had his say on the Owls‘ summer recruitment. He posted on X:
“I think one of the biggest issues with #SWFC’s summer recruitment was that pretty much nobody who signed is significantly better than what was already there… Röhl has a big squad, and has to leave many out despite there being a marginal difference between who plays/doesn’t.”
Crann also added:
“In my opinion #SWFC needed five or six good quality signings to add to the side that win promotion, players who would improve them… Instead they signed 12, tipped over the apple cart completely, and ended up getting rid of the manager who signed them. Now it’s Röhl’s issue.”
Wednesday signed 12 new players in the summer and spent money on the likes of Djeidi Gassama an Pol Valentin, mostly utilising the free and loan markets.
A poor summer transfer window…
Like Crann says, Wednesday didn’t really improve the side in the summer.
Making the step up to the Championship, the Owls needed proper recruitment; properly managed and well-researched recruitment, but for a variety of reasons, it was a bit of a mismatched summer window.
The Owls’ lack of a recruitment chief, the change in manager, and the overall sense of instability caused by Dejphon Chansiri and his outbursts meant that the Owls had a very poor summer.
Several summer arrivals have failed to impress and Wednesday are paying the price now, with the club looking doomed for relegation into League One.
Does January hold any hope for Sheffield Wednesday?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem so.
Issues both on and off the pitch doesn’t make Sheffield Wednesday a very attractive place for players right now, though with Rohl and a new-look coaching team at the helm, they may be a more attractive loan destination than before.
Wednesday do need to make a number of signings if they’re to stand a chance of survival, but whether or not Rohl will have the resources remains to be seen, if not unlikely.
All that the Owls can do right now is get as many points on the board as they can before Christmas, with a trip to Birmingham City up next.
