Sheffield Wednesday lost 4-1 away at Coventry City in the FA Cup fourth round last night.
Sheffield Wednesday played Coventry City for a third time in five games last night, with last night’s clash being an FA Cup fourth round replay.
And as ever, Sheffield Wednesday looked fairly decent in the first half, going into half-time at 1-1 after Bailey Cadamarteri cancelled out Kasey Palmer’s opener.
But the Sky Blues run riot in the second half, scoring three goals to eventually win 4-1, with Maidstone United their next opponents in the fifth round.
For the Owls, all focus is now on league action. But Rohl may have a new worry on his mind after last night’s defeat.
Sheffield Wednesday put in another woeful defensive display
Sheffield Wednesday went into last night’s game on the back of an embarrassing 4-0 defeat away at Huddersfield Town last weekend.
It was a shocking result and performance, especially defensively with several individual errors leading to goals.
And last night’s game was another forgettable defensive performance for the Owls who’ve now conceded 12 goals in their last four away games; last night at Coventry, at Huddersfield last weekend, and away at Southampton last month.
Owls can’t rely on Hillsborough form to stay up
In the home form table in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday are 20th.
Danny Rohl has seen his side pick up 16 points at Hillsborough from a possible 45, but away from home, Sheffield Wednesday have taken just seven points from a possible 45.
But relying solely on home form won’t be enough for the Owls and Rohl will know that.
For Rohl though, it simply seems like he doesn’t have the players capable of staying up; at least right now, and especially in defence.
The addition of Kristian Pedersen and his subsequent poor debut vs Huddersfield shone a light on just how bad the current defensive options are.
Di’Shon Bernard is perhaps the only consistent. Though he’s had to chop and change partners throughout the season, with the full-backs often changing too, as well as the goalkeeper.
Rohl is still searching for his best defensive line up and it could now be a case of changing shape, maybe to a back-five.
It’ll certainly be interest to see what changes Rohl makes for Friday’s crunch match vs Birmingham City.
Another defeat here would keep the Owls eight points behind Huddersfield Town in 21st and also give Birmingham City a huge three points in their own fight for survival.
