Sheffield Wednesday have once again been linked with Newcastle United’s Isaac Hayden.

Sheffield Wednesday were rumoured to be interested in signing Isaac Hayden in the summer, but the midfielder eventually shunned a move to Hillsborough in favour of Standard Liege.

The 28-year-old went onto make eleven appearances for the Belgian outfit, while the club failed to win any of the four matches where he didn’t feature in the first half of the campaign.

With the Belgian Pro League currently on their winter break, The Telegraph have reported that Newcastle are now set to terminate his loan early and allow him to join a Championship club instead.

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in making a second attempt to sign Hayden, however they face competition from the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End and Plymouth Argyle.

With John Buckley’s loan spell ending prematurely due to injury, The Owls are on the hunt for a new midfielder.

While Hayden would be a solid signing, there is no guarantee they would win the race for his signature.

Here are three other midfielders that Sheffield Wednesday could target instead…

Tim Iroegbunam – Aston Villa

Tim Iroegbunam made his mark on the Championship last season, making 32 appearances whilst on loan with QPR.

The 20-year-old was the runner-up for the club’s Young Player of the Year and QPR were eager to bring him back to the club, but he was instead expected to challenge for his place at Aston Villa.

However, Iroegbunam has struggled with injuries this term and journalist Darren Witcoop has now reported that Villa are open to selling the midfielder this month.

It’s unclear how much he would cost, but the report also claims that QPR could go back in for him.

Cameron Brannagan – Oxford United

Cameron Brannagan joined Oxford United from Liverpool back in 2018 and has consistently been one of League One’s best players.

The midfielder was named in the PFA Team of the Year on two occasions, as well as winning Oxford’s Player of the Year in 2022.

Bristol City are reportedly interested in signing Brannagan in January, while Sheffield Wednesday would do well to compete for his signature.

George Dobson – Charlton Athletic

George Dobson previously disappointed in the Championship with Sunderland, but has since impressed in the third tier.

The 26-year-old arrived at Charlton Athletic in 2021 and was named as their Player of the Year, while he now serves as club captain.

Dobson has won the most tackles in the whole of League One this season (77) and has remained a very important player at The Valley.

Charlton certainly won’t want to sell Dobson this month, but their position in the table (14th) may tempt him to have a second crack at the Championship.
