Sheffield Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz has been explaining whether or not new signing Di’Shon Bernard will play on Friday night. The Owls bring the curtain up on their 2023/24 campaign with a visit from Southampton in the Championship.

The 22-year-old checked in at Hillsborough yesterday. He ended a long association with Manchester United in the summer and becomes the fifth permanent signing for Wednesday.

Munoz will be demanding more players arrive at the club. He’s desperate to ensure his team are competitive this season and he will hope that more new arrivals can bolster his squad.

Bernard looks like an eye-catching signing. He spent the second half of last season on loan with Portsmouth and proved capable of playing in a number of defensive positions.

Now, he will hope to get into the Wednesday team as quickly as he possibly can. Bernard is available to play against Southampton and Munoz has now provided an update on whether or not he will.

He told The Star: “I’m very happy with Di’Shon, I know about him and he has big potential for us. It’s one step more, and we need to keep on moving every day.

“Right now, we’ve spoken with him and he’s had some testing in the training ground. We need to know exactly how fit he is, it’s true he played with the national team and maybe he’s not 100% fit.

“Maybe he has a very good condition though. We need to check him and put out our strongest XI on Friday.”

The Owls performer will want to get into the team as quickly as possible. He will see this permanent move as a chance to really put some roots down in his career and he will want to settle.

It would be great to see Bernard get a run out on Friday against Southampton. However, the consensus is that he may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Bernard will be behind players who have featured in the pre-season games. Naturally, he might have to be patient and wait to grasp his first opportunity at the club.

The man who recently left Manchester United will be desperate to impress. Under Munoz, he could thrive and it will be fascinating to see how he gets on.
