Sheffield Wednesday completed the signing of Di’Shon Bernard yesterday, with the player checking in on a free transfer. As the ink dried on his new contract, the defender received praise from Anthony Elanga and James Garner.

The Owls have done well to get this deal over the line. The man who has left Manchester United to sign for Wednesday is arguably the most eye-catching addition that the club has made this summer.

Bernard spent the second half of last season on loan with Portsmouth. He made 10 appearances for the club and fulfilled responsibilities at right-back and centre-back when called upon.

Xisco Munoz has been keen to strengthen his defensive options since arriving at the club. Now, he’s signed a player with bags of potential and one who should have benefitted from years of being in the Manchester United academy.

Wednesday have now completed this signing and it will be interesting to see where Munoz decides to play him. Nonetheless, he will provide some much-needed cover in key areas of the pitch.

Bernard is also an international player. The 22-year-old has made six appearances for Jamaica and also scored a single goal for his country.

Bernard signs for Wednesday and receives messages from Elanga and Garner

The man who has spent several years at United looks like a useful signing for Wednesday. After signing, he’s received messages on Instagram from Forest winger Elanga and Everton midfielder Garner.

Elanga who recently signed for Nottingham Forest for £15 million was first to message the Wednesday newcomer. He said: “BERNARDDDDDD”, also putting three flame emojis next to his post.

Garner moved to Everton last summer and he was next. He simply said: “Good luck brother.”

Wednesday will hope that Bernard can get up to speed quickly. The Owls begin their campaign on Friday night against Southampton and they will want to get off to a strong start.

This season won’t be easy for the Owls. They have a new manager, with new ideas and they probably still need a few more new signings to come through the door.

Still, the signing of Bernard does look like a strong one. Hopefully, he can live up to his potential and fire Wednesday to success during the 2023/24 campaign.
