What we know about Danny Rohl contract at Sheffield Wednesday as Sunderland claim made

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has recently been linked with Championship rivals Sunderland.

Last week, reports emerged claiming that Sunderland have shortlisted Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl ahead of the summer.

The Black Cats have an interim boss in charge and given Rohl’s impressive turnaround at Hillsborough, it’s no surprise to see him being linked with a move elsewhere.

Rumours of Championship interest surfaced earlier in the year but now we know that Sunderland are at least one of the teams monitoring his situation.

And here we dig a bit deeper into what Rohl’s current situation is at Sheffield Wednesday

Danny Rohl Sheffield Wednesday contract

Sheffield Wednesday can be very tight-lipped about contracts with both managers and players, especially more recently.

The likes of Marvin Johnson, for example, signed a contract extension last summer but the length of which was never officially disclosed, though he’s widely speculated to be out of contract in the summer.

And on social media, there seems to be a bit of confusion or unknowing about Rohl’s current Sheffield Wednesday deal too.

In the past, it was revealed that Darren Moore and many of his predecessors were on rolling contracts at Hillsborough, lasting one season at a time.

But earlier this season, it was claimed in Germany, and never disproved, that Rohl had signed a contract until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Will Sunderland pay-out Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday contract

One name who’s been on Sunderland’s managerial radar for a while now is Reims boss Will Still.

There’s been some back and forth in the media over how much Sunderland would need to pay to bring him in, though it’s widely reported that a compensation fee would be necessary.

And Sunderland recently held a Supporters’ Collective meeting and released the minutes from said meeting.

One interesting facet of the minutes read:

“KS [Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman] felt there was little correlation to a compensation fee and future success – there are simply too many variables. Opportunities must be viable and sensible, but that does not mean the Club wouldn’t source a Head Coach currently inpost at another Club.”

So the short answer here is: Yes, Sunderland would be ready to pay Rohl out of his Sheffield Wednesday contract.

More alarmingly for Dejphon Chansiri and the Wednesday fans is that Sunderland have some valuable assets within their ranks that look likely to move on this summer.

Jack Clarke is one, and he could net the club upwards of £20million, so paying out Rohl who is under contract for another year and unlikely to have been given a huge pay packet by Chansiri could be easily done.

Of course, it all remains to be seen.

Right now, Rohl is just one of a number of names being linked and the German’s focus will no doubt be on Sheffield Wednesday and the final eight games.

But it remains that staying in the division would surely, greatly, bolster Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of keeping Rohl for at least another season.
