Danny Rohl has explained what Sheffield Wednesday did in training last week that helped them beat Bristol City.

Sheffield Wednesday have really stepped up their performances in recent weeks, claiming six points from a possible nine.

The Owls had conceded 15 goals in only six games prior to their upturn in form, but have now claimed two clean sheets since they were thrashed by Coventry City in the FA Cup.

After long periods of switching the team around and not really finding a settled starting line-up, Sheffield Wednesday’s backline have massively improved and they now have the likes of Ike Ugbo and Anthony Musaba to rely on in attack.

The Yorkshire outfit had really struggled to find consistency and were being punished my individual errors and disappointing performances, but each player seemed to take it up a notch against Bristol City.

Danny Rohl has now highlighted the one thing they did in training last week that may have resulted in a much better display from his team on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to The Star, the German said: “On Friday we had a high quality last training before the game.

“It was great to see how much of a challenge they had; the starters against the subs in this case. It was good to see and everybody was fighting for the position in the starting line-up and this is the culture we want and we need at the club.

“Today we can enjoy but already the next game is in my mind. The next week will be tough against Rotherham, Plymouth and Leeds. We cannot rest, we have to go again and again and we will have a great opportunity to achieve our goals.”

How has Danny Rohl done it?

The likes of Di’Shon Bernard and Barry Bannan have been two of only a few players who have established a regular spot in the team so far this term, while many others have been particularly underwhelming.

However, Danny Rohl now has players battling it out for their position in the team and that can only increase productivity and quality. If everyone is playing well then that provides healthy competition for the starters, because they know that they are no longer guaranteed a place in the line-up even when they are underperforming.

The Owls’ defence in particular has massively improved, and players like Pol Valentin have really stepped it up. This will make someone like Dominic Iorfa, who has returned from injury, put even more work into his training to earn his place back in the squad.
