Trialist leaves Sheffield Wednesday despite praise from Henrik Pedersen

Sheffield Wednesday have had a number of players on trial since the summer as they look to add free agents to the squad.

Given a number of embargoes placed on the Owls, signings have been at a premium, with Liam Cooper and Nathan Redmond both checking in during recent weeks.

Wednesday were deducted another six points earlier this week but a limit on what they can spend in the transfer market has now been lifted, allowing the prospective new owners to devise a transfer plan.

Not every trialist gets a contract at Hillsborough these days, however, with Wednesday showcasing that they’re not completely desperate with one trialist now departing the club.

Trialist leaves Sheffield Wednesday and could join rivals

One player who won’t be joining Sheffield Wednesday is Duncan Watmore.

The versatile forward has been without a club since leaving Millwall at the end of last season, and although he’s impressed at Wednesday, a contract won’t be forthcoming.

Watmore burst onto the scene at Sunderland, playing Premier League football for them before spells with Hibs and Middlesbrough, before joining Millwall.

Now, according to the Rotherham Advertiser, the Millers could pick Watmore up on a short-term deal as they strive to get more attacking options through the door.

Their boss, Matt Hamshaw, looks unlikely to do any business until the January transfer window and has remained coy over whether he will act on the reported interest.

What Henrik Pedersen said about Duncan Watmore

It would appear as though the Wednesday boss was more than happy with Watmore when he was on trial with the club.

However, it wasn’t to be for him in terms of winning a contract, with the player having a less-than-exemplary record with injuries over the years.

Pedersen said: “He has done really well here. We know that he has a fight with his body, but he has trained really well. He has been so good in the dressing room, where he supports and helps all the boys. From the football side, he has done it really well and also from a personal side.”

Now, Wednesday will hope to take over in the near future so that a firm transfer plan can be put in place ready for January and, more crucially, next summer.
