Sheffield Wednesday youngster Pierce Charles could soon join the limited list of Owls players to have left S6 for the Premier League.

Pierce Charles is yet to even make his Championship debut for Sheffield Wednesday. But already there’s big hopes for the 19-year-old.

Now Northern Ireland’s no.1 choice goalkeeper, Charles has come through the Wednesday academy, playing in Carabao Cup games for Danny Rohl this season.

Rohl speaks very highly of Charles at Sheffield Wednesday. But the Owls boss remains loyal to James Beadle who’s the clear no.1 right now.

Ahead of Saturday’s game at home to Preston, though, it’s been revealed that Premier League clubs have been scouting Charles ahead of the January transfer window.

Now, Sheffield Wednesday News can reveal that Liverpool are among the clubs tracking Charles.

Should Charles leave Hillsborough for a Premier League team, he’ll become just the fifth Owls player to have been signed by a top flight English side since 2000.

The last five players to leave Sheffield Wednesday in Premier League transfers

Benito Carbone

Italian attacker Benito Carbone joined Sheffield Wednesday from Inter in a £3million deal back in 1996, eventually leaving for Aston Villa in late 1999.

He was signed by Aston Villa who were in the Premier League at the time, eventually finishing 6th the season that Carbone joined.

It was never made clear how much Villa paid for Carbone. Nowadays, the 53-year-old manages Inter’s U18s.

Niclas Alexandersson

Swedish centre-back Niclas Alexandersson was a formidable name during his three years at Wednesday, playing for the Owls between 1997 and 200 after joining from IFK Goteborg.

Now 52, Alexandersson was Wednesday’s Player of the Year when they were relegated from the Premier League in 2000, with Everton then snapping him up in a £2.5million deal.

He eventually racked up 109 caps for Sweden, retiring in 2009 with Goteborg.

Richard Cresswell

Richard Creswell was another who left Wednesday following their Premier League relegation, albeit staying for a brief spell at the start of the 2000/01 season.

He left S6 for Leicester City in a £750,000 deal in September 2000, spending just one season there before moving to Preston where he became a fan favourite.

Cresswell also went on to make 141 appearances for Sheffield United, finishing his career at York City in 2013.

Madjid Bougherra

Wednesday fended off Championship competition to sign Madjid Bougherra from Gueugnon in 2006.

But after just one-and-a-half seasons in S6, he was snapped up by Charlton Athletic in January 2007 as they tried to fend off relegation from the Premier League.

The Addicks were eventually relegated however, and Bougherra now manages Qatari top flight side Al-Markhiya.

Rhoys Wiggins

Left-back Rhoys Wiggins was another who Sheffield Wednesday signed and sold on in quick time.

The 37-year-old spent just half-a-season at Hillsborough before he was signed by Eddie Howe a Bournemouth in January 2016.

That was the fourth time Howe had signed Wiggins for Bournemouth. Wiggins is now retired, last playing at Bournemouth in 2018.
