Sheffield Wednesday were linked with a move to sign Brooke Norton-Cuffy on loan from Arsenal this summer. Darren Moore really fancied the tricky player and on Saturday he showed Wednesday what they’re missing.
Once Moore had departed Hillsborough it was game over as far as Wednesday were concerned over Norton-Cuffy. The tricky performer had a host of suitors and clearly, neither Xisco Munoz nor Dejphon Chansiri fancied him.
At the weekend, Wednesday were truly awful against Millwall who ran out 4-0 winners. They’re unlikely to play an easier game this season and Norton-Cuffy was in fine form.
Wednesday get glimpse of what they could have signed
The 19-year-old looks set for a bright future in the game. Arsenal certainly rate him highly and Wednesday could have pulled off a major coup had they landed Norton-Cuffy.
Instead, Millwall fought off competition from a whole host of clubs to land the teenager. He’s been a regular in the team and it was perhaps ironic that he would score his first goal at Hillsborough.
Norton-Cuffy would have been perfect for the right-sided wing-back role that Danny Rohl has showcased he likes to play with. Wednesday have been playing Callum Paterson there but he’s hardly a natural fit for that role given his status as a utility man.
Norton-Cuffy could have starred at Wednesday
It’s likely that Moore’s list of transfer targets would have been sound. Priority would have been placed on younger players who could bring energy and athleticism to the cause.
Instead, the Owls got a mixed bag of players from all four corners of the continent and a number of loan signings which have all made minimal impact at this stage.
Norton-Cuffy would have been a brilliant signing for Wednesday. He’s quickly established himself at Millwall and on Saturday he gave the Owls a stark reminder of just how different things could have been during the summer transfer window.
