Arsenal youngster Brooke Norton-Cuffy has emerged as a potential transfer target for Sheffield Wednesday this summer. The player spent last season on loan with Coventry City where he helped them to the Championship Play-Off Final.
According to The Star, Darren Moore is keen to bring the attack-minded defender to Hillsborough this summer. Norton-Cuffy is a right-sided wing-back and will be allowed to leave Arsenal again this summer.
It’s likely that the Gunners will only sanction a deal that involves the youngster going out on loan again. He’s rated highly at the Emirates Stadium, although it’s not clear when his contract in North London runs to.
Norton-Cuffy would come to Hillsborough with experience of playing in the second tier following his efforts with Coventry. He made 45 appearances for the Sky Blues during 2022/23 and helped the team make it to Wembley.
The 19-year-old is no stranger to South Yorkshire either. He enjoyed a 21-game spell with Rotherham United as they won promotion from League One during the 2021/22 campaign and he performed well.
Norton-Cuffy has a quality role model who he likes to look up to at Arsenal. In September 2022, he told The Sun: “Bukayo is the starting right winger of the Arsenal team wearing the number seven. They are inspirations because you can see it’s achievable.”
Wednesday want Norton-Cuffy
This would be a quality signing from a Wednesday perspective. It would bring an injection of pace to the Owls’ right-hand side and they’d likely need to fight off a number of top clubs.
Norton-Cuffy is probably a little way off starring in the Premier League just yet. One more loan spell in the Championship could be just what is needed for the player and Hillsborough is the place for his development.
Moore would love to lower the average age of his squad this summer. The second tier will provide the Owls with a stern test next season and some energetic players would be ideal.
Rumour rating: 8/10 – This would be a signing that would likely be universally popular among the Wednesday fan base. They definitely need a couple of brave players who aren’t afraid to take players on and Norton-Cuffy fits that billing.
Whether the Owls can get him remains to be seen. Surely, however, the player would welcome the chance to turn out in front of over 30,000 people every week and that could put Wednesday in good stead.
