Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has given his score prediction for the Championship clash between Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
The Owls travel to Ipswich Town in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.
Danny Rohl‘s Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-0 against Leeds United in their last outing and remain in 23rd place of the Championship table, needing just a point to pull themselves to safety.
Ipswich Town meanwhile are in 3rd after losing against Cardiff City last weekend and being leapfrogged by Leeds, though a win at Portman Road on Saturday could see them move back into the automatic promotion places.
Sheffield Wednesday lost 1-0 vs Ipswich Town earlier in the season. Despite the Tractor Boys’ strong recent form, winning six in a row before Cardiff, they’re yet to keep a clean sheet at home in 2024.
David Prutton predicts Ipswich Town to beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1
Giving his weekly Championship predictions, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder and now Sky Sports pundit David Prutton predicted a 2-1 Ipswich Town win vs the Owls.
He wrote:
“How much will that dramatic late defeat at Cardiff impact Ipswich? Their winning run came to an end, but they still have the chance to climb back into second here, at least for 24 hours. They need to shake it off quickly because there is little room for error now.
“Sheffield Wednesday were beaten by Leeds last time out to end their own streak of victories, but they shouldn’t let that result against such a good side halt their momentum too much. They will still turn up to Portman Road optimistic of getting a result, but I think the Tractor Boys will bounce back here.”
Ipswich Town vs Sheffield Wednesday H2H
Ipswich Town’s 1-0 win at Hillsborough earlier in the season was settled by a Conor Chaplin goal in the 45th minute.
And that win was the Tractor Boys’ first win against Wednesday since 2018.
In fact, the Owls have only lost one game against Ipswich Town since 2018, playing the East Anglian side seven times and winning on three occasions, with one of those wins coming at Portman Road.
Last season in League One, Darren Moore‘s Sheffield Wednesday drew 2-2 at Ipswich in the February, with Michael Smith and George Byers on the scoresheet that day.
Wednesday’s last win at Ipswich came back in February 2019 courtesy of a Lucas Joao goal in a 1-0 win.
Owls facing relegation to League One
Despite the upturn in form over the past few weeks, Sheffield Wednesday remain in the bottom three.
IF the season ended now, they’d be relegated back to League One after just one season back in the second tier.
But there’s still nine games left to play including this weekend’s game at Ipswich, and 27 points left to play for in what’s shaped up to be a very intriguing end to the season.
For both Ipswich and Wednesday, there’s plenty to play for, though Ipswich are of course the overwhelming favourites to win this game.
The Owls might fancy the underdog title and they should take a lot of confidence into this game; not only have they been in good form recently, but they’ve shown in games against Leicester City and Leeds that they can cause the top teams in the league problems.
Ipswich have a habit of conceding goals but also of coming from behind to win games, so there’s plenty of room for maneuver from a Wednesday perspective, but also plenty to be wary of at Portman Road.
