Liam Palmer has recalled the 2023 League One play-off semi-final clash between Sheffield Wednesday and Peterborough United.

Dubbed the ‘Hillsborough Miracle’, Sheffield Wednesday came from four goals behind to eventually beat Peterborough United on penalties in the 2022/23 League One play-off semi finals.

The Owls of course went on to win promotion in the final against Barnsley, with Josh Windass scoring a late injury time winner.

It’s arguably one of the best, if not the best play-off comeback in English Football League history, and a memory that Sheffield Wednesday fans will hold for a long time to come.

Its also a memory that the players will share for years to come too, and veteran Owls man Liam Palmer has recalled that night at Hillsborough, and how former manager Darren Moore helped to inspire the comeback.

Moore is now managing Port Vale in league Two following their relegation from League One last season.

Liam Palmer recalls Darren Moore inspiration ahead of Sheffield Wednesday vs Peterborough United

Speaking on Owls Heaven ahead of his testimonial match against Leganes this weekend, 32-year-old Palmer recalled the Peterborough United comeback win.

Palmer also revealed how Moore helped to inspire the win, saying: “I don’t think anybody ever thought it possible to come back in the manner we did.

“We kind of said to each other, ‘Look, we get two goals early in the first half, we only need two goals in 45 minutes’.

“Darren Moore actually put a presentation up and pinpointed how many times we’d scored four or more goals in the seasons that had just been, so we knew it were possible.”

During that 2022/23 League One season, Sheffield Wednesday scored four or more goals on four occasions, and during the previous 2021/22 season under Moore, the Owls scored four or more on five occasions.

The key thing Liam Palmer gained from that Sheffield Wednesday comeback

Palmer has certainly been around the block with Sheffield Wednesday.

He’s a true leader and inspiration to the younger players coming through, and games like that Peterborough United one will have given him huge experience which he can apply to future games.

It’s likely that Palmer and his teammates recalled upon that experience last season when Sheffield Wednesday were up against it in the fight for survival in the Championship.

With Danny Rohl now at the helm, perhaps offering much more tactical insight than Moore did, the landscape has suddenly changed for Sheffield Wednesday’s first-team players.

But that memory will last with Palmer, and give him experience in future games at Sheffield Wednesday.
