Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Will Vaulks has emerged as a transfer target for Derby County ahead of transfer deadline day. The promotion winner has fallen down the pecking order under Xisco Munoz and an exit could now be sanctioned.

According to The Star, Vaulks is the subject of some interest from the League One outfit. The interest makes sense too, with Paul Warne the manager who managed to get the very best out of the midfielder at Rotherham United.

The 29-year-old was instrumental last season as the team managed to win promotion to the Championship in dramatic circumstances. He’s made 59 appearances for the Owls in total but could now be on his way out of the club.

A sale for Vaulks comes after Wednesday were linked with a couple of midfielders from Premier League outfit Newcastle. Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick have both been linked with a move to Hillsborough before tomorrow’s deadline.

Vaulks is well-versed when it comes to playing in the EFL. When he was at Cardiff City, Mick McCarthy called him ‘brilliant’ after he helped the Bluebirds claim an emphatic victory over the Rams back in 2021.

If the Owls could land Hayden and Hendrick on deadline day, Vaulks would be even further down the pecking order. The midfielder will want to play at this stage of his career and dropping into League One would likely be something he would consider.

Vaulks played 137 times for Rotherham during his time at the club. He was rated highly by Warne and after a disjointed start for Derby, the Rams would surely welcome the player coming into their midfield engine room.

Wednesday haven’t got a point from their first four games back in the Championship. Munoz knows he needs to start winning games soon and he will want to ensure that his squad is in the best shape possible after Friday’s deadline.
