Sheffield Wednesday fans will be frustrated by their lack of players in the EFL Team of the Week.
The Owls’ squad received high praise for their dominating performance against Plymouth Argyle, which Josh Windass, Jamal Lowe and Michael Smith scoring in the 4-0 win.
Sheffield Wednesday arguably put on the performance of the weekend as they moved to the top of the table, having claimed a whopping 30 shots against the Pilgrims.
Yan Valery was named Sky Sports’ man of the match following his impressive debut, while Svante Ingelsson was surely a close second – being described as ‘tremendous’ and a ‘monster‘.

Josh Windass named in the EFL Team of the Week
Despite exceptional displays across the board, only one Wednesday player was named in the EFL Team of the Week.
Windass was awarded for his goal with a place in the midfield of the XI. Meanwhile, Sunderland had three players, Sheffield United and Burnley had two each and Millwall, West Brom and Oxford all had one.
The team was based on WhoScored’s ratings, with Windass receiving an impressive 8.35 rating. The 30-year-old made 62 touches, completed 89% of his passes, made three key passes, won three tackles and made five ball recoveries.
Svante Ingelsson & Yan Valery have been hard done by
There is no denying that Windass was superb, but WhoScored’s ratings clearly don’t tell the full story when he was picked ahead of both Ingelsson and Valery.
There is no doubt that his rating was boosted massively by his goal, but overall, the two new signings were comfortably the two best players on the pitch.
In fact, WhoScored only rated Ingelsson a 7.7 and Valery a 7.6, despite their dominating performances.
The Swede made 55 touches, two key passes, won 75% of his long balls and won three tackles, while Valery made two key passes, two clearances, two interceptions and four successful tackles.
Wednesday won’t be too fussed though as the three points is all that matters, while there is no doubt the squad will get plenty more opportunities to be named in the Team of the Week this season.
Windass still deserves credit for his display though and is proving exactly why Wednesday were so desperate to offer him a new contract.
The midfielder has now scored in four consecutive competitive appearances for the Owls and is showing that the team don’t necessarily have to rely on Ike Ugbo to get the goals.
