Sheffield Wednesday star explains unusual pre-match routine that surprised Danny Rohl

Josh Windass has explained the unusual pre-match routine he does ahead of Sheffield Wednesday games.

Josh Windass joined Sheffield Wednesday from Wigan Athletic in 2020 and has since become a very important player, netting 37 goals and providing 17 assists in 219 games.

While he has spent a chunk of the season on the sidelines, the midfielder has spoken very highly of Danny Rohl and has claimed he is the best manager he has ever worked with.

The German coach is obviously very fond of Windass too, with the 30-year-old netting four goals and providing one assist in his last eight games for the Owls.

While the pair appear to have a great relationship and have both been very important for the club, it hasn’t stopped Rohl from being left very surprised by Windass’ pre-match meal.

When asked about pre-match rituals, Windass told the Pitch Side YouTube channel: “”I have a jam sandwich before a game. I have my chicken, beans and white rice, then I have my jam sandwich.

“Our gaffer genuinely saw me eating a jam sandwich and was like, in Germany this would never happen. I’ve never seen anyone else do it.”

The weirdest pre-match meals in football

Josh Windass’ pre-match meal is probably far from the weirdest in football, though I would argue that baked beans with rice was worse than a jam sandwich.

Former Sheffield Wednesday academy product Jamie Vardy has previously admitted that he would have three red bulls, a double espresso and a cheese and ham omelette to make him ‘run around like a nut-job’ during a match.

Gareth Bale used to have five slices of toast and beans, Paul Scholes would have two Turkish Delights and a cup of tea, Andy Carroll was on Yorkshire puddings and gravy, and Wayne Rooney enjoyed Coco Pops and a banana.

It always seems to be the best players who have the strangest foods, so maybe it’s a good sign for Windass.

No doubt fans couldn’t care less what the 30-year-old was eating before matches if it meant he was actually playing in them.

Windass has missed 15 games in all competitions so far this season and his injury record is proving to be a huge concern as they head into the key stage of their relegation scrap.

With a number of tough games coming up, Sheffield Wednesday could really do with Windass back in the squad. However, it is so far unclear when he will make his return.
