This Sheffield Wednesday favourite has revealed that he’s keen on becoming a coach when his playing days are over.

Sheffield Wednesday have had their share of coaches and managers over the years, with a real array in terms of the types of managers.

In the 2023/24 season alone, the Owls went from Xisco Munoz to Danny Rohl; with the latter arguably being the club’s best manager in almost 10 years, and the former being statistically the club’s worst-ever manager.

Fans will hope that Rohl settles down at Hillsborough and gets the club back on track after some very tough years being in and out of the Championship.

There’ll be a lot of planning for the future this summer in terms of the playing squad and contracts, with the contracts of many of their current players still to finalise.

Liam Palmer is one of those out of contract in the summer; now on 436 total appearances for the Owls, the 32-year-old says that his representatives will be sorting out his next step.

But Palmer has also given a thought to the years ahead, with coaching something that he wants to eventually move into.

Liam Palmer outlines plans to become a coach

Speaking to Football Heaven, Palmer discussed a number of things including his plans for the future.

He’s currently studying for his coaching badges, recently undertaking a UEFA B License course with the hope of one day becoming an academy coach.

Palmer said: “I’d love to coach. I’d love to coach kids in the academy. I like when you give them points and things to look at and they put it into practise.

“Management, I’m not sure so having seen the highs and the lows of it; it’s a short-lived, now especially, a short-lived career.

“But everyone tells you to get your UEFA B done whilst you’re playing, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m getting it done.

“Get it boxed off then I’ve got it if I want to pick something up coaching wise or an opportunity comes along as an academy manager or as a manager.”

Sheffield Wednesday know exactly what to do with Liam Palmer

Palmer is Sheffield Wednesday through and through, and although he’s got a few years left playing, him becoming a coach with the Owls is surely nailed on.

The club needs people like Palmer who have the best interest of the club at heart. Him working as an academy manager, having come through the academy himself, could really help the club define their younger players into proper ‘Wednesday players’.

And the Owls are certainly placing more emphasis on the academy and on younger players with Rohl now at the helm, as seen with the breakthrough of Bailey Cadamarteri this season.

Palmer is clearly keen on coaching and there may be a position waiting for him in S6 as soon as he finishes playing.

And whilst he’s played under a lot of different managers, it looks like Palmer has perhaps been put off by some of the horror tenures he’s witnessed in S6, though he’s not ruled it out entirely.

But it seems like the Englishman has a few more years left as a player. He showed in the 2023/24 season that he’s still a very useful player at Championship level and someone who scores some very important goals too.

It looks like he’ll surely stay at the club, but if he doesn’t then he won’t be short of suitors.
