Giles Coke has heaped praise on one Sheffield Wednesday star who ‘deserves a lot of credit’.
The Sheffield Wednesday squad have been showered in praise in recent weeks, having enjoyed a six-game unbeaten run to avoid relegation from the Championship.
Despite spending a majority of the campaign in the bottom three, the Owls secured their survival with a 2-0 win over Sunderland on the final day.
Danny Rohl was hailed for his impact on the team’s performances, while Josh Windass was another who had scored in three matches on the bounce to aid their survival.
However, former Wednesday midfielder Giles Coke believes one player who struggled for game-time should get more ‘credit’.
Bailey Cadamarteri has ‘done unbelievably well’
Speaking to The Star, Coke said: “Bailey’s [Cadamarteri] done unbelievably well, he’s come into a really difficult situation with the club not doing well at all. For him to come in as a young lad into a team low on confidence and do what he’s done, score some important goals, he deserves a lot of credit.
“It offers a big message for the youth team, if they can see that then there’s no reason why they can’t do the same thing.”
Bailey Cadamarteri was promoted to the senior team just a month after Danny Rohl arrived, and went onto score three goals in his first five starts.
The 19-year-old’s game-time did rapidly decrease following Ike Ugbo’s arrival, while he managed only two starts in their final 14 games.
However, Cadamarteri did score in the 1-1 draw with Swansea City in March – his fourth and final goal of the season.
The teenager is progressing at the perfect pace
The teenager was never supposed to be Wednesday’s first-choice striker this season and the club had been warned not to put too much pressure on him.
Ugbo’s impact was a blessing in disguise to Cadamarteri, as it meant he was given his own time to settle into the senior team and can now prepare for a full pre-season and campaign under Rohl.
The attacker’s future in the first team will depend on who the Owls bring in this summer, while the club should look to send him out on loan if his minutes are going to look even more bleak.
Cadamarteri has definitely shown his potential this term though and it shows great promise for Wednesday’s future – whichever league that may be in.
