One Sheffield Wednesday player was left ‘baffled’ after an ‘unbelievable’ key moment in the 2-0 defeat vs Leeds United last Friday.
Sheffield Wednesday saw a four-game winning run come to an end last Friday night.
The Owls hosted Yorkshire rivals Leeds United in what was a hotly-anticipated game in the Championship, between two form teams at opposite ends of the table.
In the end though, Leeds’ class showed, with the Whites scoring either side of half-time to claim all three points.
Sheffield Wednesday now remain in 23rd place of the Championship table, needing a point to pull themselves level again.
Djeidi Gassama left ‘baffled’ after Illan Meslier save
The game on Friday started very evenly, and it was arguably Sheffield Wednesday who had the first biggest chance of the night.
The ball landed to the feet of Djeidi Gassama inside the Leeds United penalty area. The Frenchman then fired a shot at goal, but his national compatriot Illan Meslier was equal to it, with the ball hitting his leg and going behind for a corner.
Gassama was visibly shocked after the miss; so too where most of the Sheffield Wednesday fans in the ground.
Commenting on the matter, journalist George Elek said on the Not The Top 20 Podcast:
“The key moment in this game was, rather than being one of the goals, was Meslier’s unbelievable save from Gassama. It’s not often you see a player miss an opportunity and then look just absolutely baffled at the fact that their shot hasn’t gone in, and on that moment, the game seemed to kind of turn.”
What could’ve been for Sheffield Wednesday against Leeds United
Sheffield Wednesday couldn’t have gone into the Leeds game in better form.
But they were always expected to struggle against a Leeds side who’d won 10 of their previous 11 league games before their trip to Hillsborough.
In the end, Danny Rohl‘s side were simply outclassed by a better side, with more expensive players and more quality to bring off the bench.
The Owls certainly didn’t discredit themselves and if that Gassama chance had gone in, it could’ve been a very different story.
Meslier knew very little about the strike, simply making himself big and seeing the ball deflect off him and go behind.
Come the end of the season, though, Sheffield Wednesday won’t want to have any ‘what if’ moments about their campaign.
They need to leave everything on the pitch every time they play between now and the end of the season, with only nine games left to salvage their campaign.
