Sheffield Wednesday were linked with a move for Everton striker Tom Cannon over the weekend. However, the player was spotted watching Preston North End in action against Aberdeen on Saturday.
The need for new players at Hillsborough is evident. Wednesday have endured a rotten pre-season on the transfer front and so far they’ve only managed to land Reece James on a permanent basis.

Cannon looks to be on the move this summer as Everton look to get him some regular first-team football. During the second half of 2022/23, he went on loan to Preston and he didn’t disappoint.
In 21 games, he found the net eight times and registered a single assist. He led the line incredibly well and after being spotted at Deepdale, it would seem as though he’s now ready to join Ryan Lowe’s team again.
That would leave Wednesday to go back to the drawing board. Their need for new recruits is crystal clear and Cannon would have also helped the club lower the average age of their squad.

Wednesday have Michael Smith and Lee Gregory as their options in the attack. Both players are now in their thirties and there will come a time in the future when the club needs to replace them.
Cannon might have only been a loan addition to the Wednesday ranks. It’s unclear what the future holds for him with Everton though and heading to Hillsborough might have led to a permanent deal at some point.
Wednesday linked player now set for Preston move
It does look as though, Preston will win this race to sign Cannon for a second spell. He clearly enjoyed his football at Deepdale and Wednesday are looking set to miss out on the player.

It’s a Daily Mail article that claims that Wednesday still hold an interest. However, with the player attending Preston games, it seems for all the world that Cannon will sign there in the near future.
Wednesday can’t dwell on this setback for too long. Xisco Munoz needs players desperately before the campaign gets underway and the clock is now ticking for the Owls.
