Sheffield Wednesday are in discussions over a potential new deal for their newest teen sensation.
Last week was a memorable one for Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl.
In two games at Hillsborough, Danny Rohl‘s side claimed four point; drawing against Leicester City before beating Blackburn Rovers in a 3-1 thriller.
The Owls remain at the bottom of the Championship table, but with a newfound optimism in their battle for survival this season.
And a new hero emerged last week in Bailey Cadamarteri.
The 18-year-old academy graduate started both games and impressed, scoring his first goal for the club in the win over Blackburn Rovers too.
Sheffield Wednesday want new deal for Bailey Cadamarteri
The Star are now reporting that the Owls opened contract talks with Cadamarteri last month, and that ‘discussions are ongoing as things stand’ as Sheffield Wednesday look to tie the Englishman down to a new deal at Hillsborough.
His current deal runs out in the summer of 2025 and The Star write that Sheffield Wednesday are ‘eager to make sure that he sticks around for the foreseeable future’.
Wednesday fans haven’t been this excited about an academy player in a long time, and Rohl is a huge admirer of the player too, having spoken fondly about him so far.
Rohl told Yorkshire Post:
“I believe in this guy. He is the future for our club and it’s so important to see his improvement in the last weeks.”
Rohl also labelled the teen as a ‘special’ player following the Blackburn game.
What’s more is that Cadamarteri’s breakthrough has come at the perfect time for Sheffield Wednesday who are struggling for goals in the Championship, and so the youngster could well be an unlikely hero for the Owls this season.
Can Cadamarteri save this season?
It’s a big ask for Cadamarteri to come into this struggling Sheffield Wednesday side, with all the noise off the pitch too, and score some much-needed goals.
But so far, Cadamarteri has not looked out of place.
He’s playing like he’s got 10 years experience to his name already; the way he holds himself on the pitch, the way he plays and interacts with his teammates suggests that he doesn’t feel out of place in the first-team, and that’s a huge credit to him and his confidence.
Cadamarteri is a natural goal-scorer and his goal vs Blackburn showed his ability to be in the right place at the right time, and his ability to hold his nerve and get the ball over the line.
Right now, he’ll just be focused on getting more starts and more goals; his future won’t be a pressing issue for him right now, but getting Wednesday out of this rut will be a pressing issue.
And as long as he’s scoring and impressing, Rohl has no reason to take him out of the XI, but at the same time he’ll be wary of throwing Cadamarteri in the deep end too soon.
