Sheffield Wednesday extended a remarkable three-year record with win over Norwich City

While results may not always go Sheffield Wednesday’s way, the win over Norwich City on Tuesday night continued an unbelievable trend for the club.

It was a brilliant night under the lights at Hillsborough in midweek, as the Owls bounced back from their crushing 6-2 defeat against Watford in style.

Danny Rohl took drastic measures with his team after that result, and clearly it all paid off, as Wednesday secured a crucial and convincing 2-0 win over Norwich.

An early goal from Josh Windass — supplied by a tremendous through ball from Marvin Johnson — got things off to a flying start for the home side.

Dominic Iorfa doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark with a big header from a set-piece, and Norwich were restricted to half-chances from then on, with Wednesday’s defence holding firm.

Sheffield Wednesday love a midweek game at Hillsborough

The hectic schedule of a Football League club dictates that you’re likely to have a game at the weekend and a game a few days later, in the week, pretty much every week for the entire season.

While that can be detrimental for some teams, the momentum is valuable, and some clubs thrive on that midweek atmosphere.

Turns out, that win against Norwich was just one in a long line of positive results the Owls have picked up at home over the last three years, with an unbeaten run at Hillsborough in midweek fixtures stretching back to April 2021.

A 2-0 defeat at home to Swansea on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, is the last time Wednesday have been beaten in S6 on a weekday.

That was the year the side finished bottom of the Championship table, leading to a spell in League One, where the Owls were dominant for the majority of their two years in the third tier.

Hillsborough has become a fortress

In their first season in League One, Wednesday recorded seven wins and two draws in their home midweek fixtures. Their sophomore year in that division brought five wins and one draw as Darren Moore led the Yorkshire club to promotion.

Naturally, things have been a little tougher since stepping up to the second tier, but Wednesday have still registered four wins and four draws in those midweek home fixtures across last season and the current campaign, including the win against Norwich.

That makes it a grand total of 16 wins and seven draws for Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in midweek games, which just goes to show how important that home crowd is.

Hillsborough is one of the biggest and best stadiums outside of the Premier League, and when it’s pushing its 34,000 capacity, the place is absolutely rocking. It’s the kind of atmosphere that can unnerve even the most formidable teams in the league and gives the Wednesday players that extra edge they need to grind out results at times.

Wednesday’s next midweek home game is against Blackburn Rovers on December 10, and with the Lancashire outfit now just one point ahead of the Owls, we can expect another tight game, but one the home team will fancy if the crowd get behind them on the night.
