Sheffield Wednesday remain rooted to the foot of the Championship table, with the Owls currently 12 points adrift.
Sheffield Wednesday have won just one of their opening 18 Championship fixtures, drawing four and losing the other 13, and having scored just nine goals along the way.
The Owls claimed a very credible point at home vs league leaders Leicester City on Wednesday night, but QPR won at home vs Stoke City in midweek and Darren Moore‘s Huddersfield Town won away at Southampton to pull 12 points clear of the Owls.
Four wins are needed to close the gap, then. And whilst it doesn’t sound like much, with the likes of QPR improving, survival still seems like a very distant achievement for Danny Rohl and his players, despite the confidence that their performance vs Leicester will give them.
Rohl though believes that Sheffield Wednesday still have what it takes to beat the drop this season, and the German even thinks his side have a good chance of doing so.
Speaking to Yorkshire Live ahead of this weekend’s Championship clash vs Blackburn Rovers, the 34-year-old said:
“It’s a little bit difficult but I believe in my group and this is a good signal. We need to do it again and again but there’s a long way to go. We have a good chance to stay in the league.
“We know this is a tough week with two strong opponents, the only thing we took until now, we should have had a minimum six points more and we would be better off.
“In our situation we need the massive fans behind us, I am so patient about this. I have passion to be very close to the fans because they can give us energy and moments in the game when we are a little bit empty, but you get fresh energy. We can do it together.”
Can Sheffield Wednesday defy the odds and beat the drop?
Even before a ball was kicked, Sheffield Wednesday were largely tipped for relegation this season.
The odds are well and truly stacked against them with a poor first-team squad and little-to-no resources to bolster with in the January transfer window.
But in Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday have well-liked coach who is quickly proving that he’s a very good tactician too.
That point vs Leicester confirmed his instant impact; although results remain poor, the Owls have improved drastically, and Rohl is perhaps the only man who can save this season.
It remains a huge challenge for Sheffield Wednesday, though. They have to count on three teams finishing below them and right now, they remain the poorest team in the division.
Little steps are needed and any kind of showing in the January transfer window would help, with plenty enough holes in this current first-team.
