Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl says he has a ‘clear idea’ of what he wants in the January transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday suffered yet another defeat in the Championship yesterday, losing 2-1 away at Birmingham City.
For new boss Rohl, it’s a fifth defeat in six games at the helm, and for Sheffield Wednesday it’s a 13th defeat from their opening 17 games of the season.
The Owls remain at the foot of the Championship table and now 10 points adrift after Darren Moore and his Huddersfield Town side claimed a point vs Southampton yesterday.
What has Rohl said about January?
The January transfer window is just around the corner and for Sheffield Wednesday, it’s a huge one.
Right now they need a miracle to stand any chance of beating the drop this season, with this current crop of players nowhere near the required standard.
So that makes January pivotal. But given the off-field issues that Wednesday and Dejphon Chansiri have right now, whether or not the Owls can make any signings in the New Year remains to be seen.
Rohl recently spoke about January and hinted at potential comings and goings as he looks to add some balance to the side, and after yesterday’s game he revealed that he knows what he wants in January, hinting that he’ll hold talks with Chansiri over the club’s January business.
Rohl told Yorkshire Live:
“I know it’s a big topic but it’s not easy. I’ve a clear idea of what I want in January and I’ll push this topic. But until then I’ll work hard with my players.”
The state of Sheffield Wednesday’s recruitment
Sheffield Wednesday had a lot on their plate in the summer, and with very few people to oversee things.
Who actually oversaw the club’s summer recruitment remains to be seen following David Downes’ exit. But whoever was responsible for it has a lot of questions to answer.
Rohl has been left with a very misshaped and unbalanced side; he has plenty of options in midfield but few on the wings, and maybe just enough strikers, but all, arguably, of the same mould.
And the case could be the same again in January. But with Rohl at the helm, it could be a more positive window.
Rohl is a much better tactician than his predecessor and it seems like he’s quickly figuring out where he wants to bolster, and with what type of player.
He’ll relay that information to the hierarchy, probably Chansiri given the relative lack of hierarchy at the club, and then it’ll be down to the Owls owner to put his money on the table and save this season.
Whether Chansiri has the funding to give Rohl what he wants remains to be seen, though.
It’s a dire time for Chansiri and the club and it could be a case of Wednesday relying on loan moves, or even player sales in a bid to fund any January activity.
