Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers has said that the squad have been focusing on their performances on the pitch, rather than the issues off it.
Wednesday’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, has been under heavy scrutiny this week after originally failing to pay the club’s HMRC bill, which amounted to £2 million.
He then pleaded to the fans for 20,000 of them to each donate £100 to the club in Kerr to pay off the bill.
However, in a statement put out on Wednesday afternoon, Chansiri confirmed he had paid off the bill, along with all players and staff wages.
Byers says Wednesday squad fully focused
Speaking to the Yorkshire Post ahead of the Owls trip to Bristol City, Byers said that the squad have been focusing on getting all three points when they head to Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon.
“To be honest, as players we’ve got our responsibilities to concentrate on what happens on the pitch and what we can control – and that’s what we’ve done this week,” Byers said.
“There have been no distractions in that sense, especially with the weekend’s win and the positive vibes in the changing room. We’ve been focusing on the build-up to this weekend’s game, which is another important one for us.
“We’re professionals and things like this happen, and sometimes it gets out. But as I said, we’re solely focused on what we can control, and that’s the day to day on the training pitch. So leading up to this game, that’s all we’ve been focused on.”
Good to hear players focused on Saturday
Whilst the issues surrounding the club this week off the pitch have been bad, it is good to see the players have been professional in not letting themselves get distracted by the news.
After Sunday’s win against Rotherham, Byers has said there is a ‘positive vibe’ around the first team, and hopefully that will translate into results.
Wednesday will feel they have a good chance of making it back-to-back wins when they face managerless Bristol City.
