Sheffield Wednesday have a number of first-team players out of contract next summer, with one of them being George Byers.
Things are tough for Sheffield Wednesday right now; both on and off the pitch.
And next summer could be a pivotal one with the club having a number of key players out of contract, including names like Di’Shon Bernard, Josh Windass, Dominic Iorfa, Barry Bannan and more.
Another name out of contract next summer is the 27-year-old Byers.
The Scot has started the last two games for Sheffield Wednesday and put in one of his best performances of the season so far in the last outing vs Rotherham United.
And speaking ahead of this weekend’s Championship clash vs Bristol City, Byers has discussed his long-term future at the club.
When asked if he still views his long-term future at Hillsborough, he said:
“Yes. But there’s not been any talks at this moment in time. I’ve been solely focussed on doing well for Sheffield Wednesday and keeping us in this division and that’s all I’m focussed on right now.”
Since joining from Swansea City in 2021, Byers has made 67 total appearances for the Owls, with 13 goals and six assists to his name.
Last season was arguably his best for the club so far, with six goals and three assists in 24 League One appearances.
A new Sheffield Wednesday deal for Byers?
Byers is a huge fan favourite at Wednesday. He showcased his quality last season and was expected to be a key player this time round, but it’s been a stop start campaign so far.
Xisco Munoz didn’t really fancy Byers but it looks like Danny Rohl does, and so we could soon start to see the best of Byers.
But given Wednesday’s financial struggles, new deals for those out of contract next summer might be put on the back-burner for the time being.
Byers offered a clear response to whether or not he wants a new deal though, and Wednesday and Rohl need that kind of commitment as they faced troubled waters ahead.
This looks like to keep an eye on as we approach next summer.
