Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson offered a reminder of his quality to Danny Rohl yesterday as the under-21s beat Crewe. The player hasn’t been in a matchday squad since Xisco Munoz departed last month.
Bakinson has been with Wednesday since 2022 when he signed from Bristol City. He’s struggled to impose himself on the starting eleven since arriving and has made 39 appearances.
During the 2023/24 campaign, he has played in a number of positions by Munoz. Although he did feature in a natural central midfield role, he was also asked to play on the left and that had minimal impact on the team.
Bakinson offers reminder to Rohl
The 25-year-old was given the chance to get some minutes under his belt yesterday afternoon. Wednesday faced Crewe at Wakefield Trinity’s home stadium and ran out 2-1 winners.
Bakinson flexed his credentials for a place in the first-team fold by scoring two goals. His second came in the dying embers of the game and saw Wednesday’s youngsters continue their fine form.
The player was the only player with ample first-team experience to get a run-out on this occasion. Given that he scored twice, Bakinson will be hoping that Wednesday boss Rohl feels the need to take a closer look at him in training.
Could Bakinson earn a Wednesday reprieve?
It has to be said that it feels unlikely right now. George Byers was outstanding on Sunday and Barry Bannan is currently the club captain. Throw in Will Vaulks, Jeff Hendrick and John Buckley and Wednesday are quite well-stocked in midfield.
All Bakinson can do is continue grasping every opportunity that comes his way. He may well be some way down the pecking order on Rohl’s tactics board but whilst he’s shaping his squad, who knows?
The player is out of contract at Hillsborough in the summer. As a result, Bakinson might be using his outings for the Wednesday under-21s as a chance to put himself in the shop window for January or next summer.
