Sheffield Wednesday defeated Rotherham United 2-0 on Sunday and George Byers has won some praise for his performance. The midfielder was in fine form as he played 64 minutes of the Hillsborough clash.
Byers has been a regular in the team during the current campaign. Under Xisco Munoz he made eight appearances and even captained the team during a 3-0 defeat to Sunderland.
The 27-year-old is a respected member of the dressing room and with Liam Palmer currently being omitted from the team he’s likely to be viewed as the vice-captain.
Byers praised for performance during 2-0 win
It proved a difficult end to 2023/24 for Byers who was forced to watch from the stands as Wednesday won promotion. A hamstring injury ended his season prematurely but now he’s fully fit.
On Sunday, the player was praised for his performance by Joe Crann who writes for The Star. After he was substituted, he said on Twitter: “Big standing ovation for Byers as he’s replaced by Vaulks…He’s not happy to come off, of course, but you’d expect no less from him.
“Byers has been excellent today – I imagine it’s a case of trying to manage him more than anything.”
Byers can star at Wednesday this season
The midfield player will be keen to make up for lost time. He missed lots of football during the second half of last season and that will have left him pretty gutted.
Byers is very popular among the players and staff at Wednesday. He’s a very useful player and he will be keen to keep replicating his performance from the weekend.
Danny Rohl will be learning a lot about his players. It’s not an easy time for him to take over but in Byers he has a midfielder who it seems he will be able to trust this season.
