Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has explained how Liam Palmer reacted to being left out of the squad yesterday. The vice-captain wasn’t included among the 20-man squad as the Owls defeated Rotherham at Hillsborough.
Palmer was present at the game as Michael Smith scored twice to sink the club that Wednesday signed him from. The player wasn’t kitted up though with Rohl choosing to leave him in the stands.
It’s been something of an indifferent season for Palmer during 2023/24. The 32-year-old has made just eight appearances, with just five of those coming in the starting eleven.
Rohl explains how Palmer reacted to Wednesday snub
The experienced Wednesday star is a model professional. Furthermore, he absolutely loves the Owls and there will be no surprise that he’s responded well to this latest setback.
Rohl was quizzed on where the vice-captain was after yesterday’s game. He has explained that Palmer wasn’t injured and the German simply chose not to include him.
He told The Star: “We have just 20 positions in the squad. it was a very hard decision, I know it is always difficult for a manager when you have a big squad and I have to decide this.
“The reaction from Liam was great, he trained hard again in the morning and this is what I need. It is a long season and until the end, it’s a hard race. It’s important to see the direction of the players that didn’t play.”
Palmer will have a big part to play this season
Make no bones about it, Rohl will be utilising Palmer during the current campaign. Very few epitomise what playing for Wednesday is all about than the trusted vice-captain.
For now, he might have to remain patient. However, with Rohl getting some joy from his three centre-backs and two wing-back system yesterday, Palmer would be the ideal player for the squad.
It’s good, and not surprising, to hear that Palmer took his Wednesday omission well. He will now work on the training ground as he bids to get back into the squad for this weekend’s trip to Bristol City.
