Danny Rohl has addressed the claims that Nico Schulz is training with Sheffield Wednesday.
It was reported yesterday that Nico Schulz had linked up with the Owls in recent weeks, having been released by Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
The defender has spent time with Hertha Berlin, Borussia Monchengladbach, Hoffenheim and Dortmund, as well as picking up 12 caps for the German national team.
Danny Rohl is familiar with Schulz from his time in his home country and has welcomed him to train with the first team, with the 30-year-old yet to find a new club following his four-year stint at Signal Iduna Park.
Sheffield Wednesday had made it clear that they would look into the free agent market following the conclusion of the January transfer window, while they were eager to bring in a left-back in Kristjan Pedersen, but were left short when he picked up an injury.
It seems a coincidence that the Owls now have a free-agent left-back training with them, but Danny Rohl has now addressed his presence to play down talk of an imminent signing.
Speaking to The Star, the 34-year-old said: ““He is in training with us, he’s a training guest.
“At the moment it’s just training, and then we’ll see. For me it was more important that I had my team training good – he was a part of the group and that’s it…
“It makes no sense to speak about the personal things of a player when he’s not actually signed with Sheffield Wednesday. He’s training and that’s the situation at the moment.”
Will Sheffield Wednesday really sign Nico Schulz?
Nico Schulz has bags of experience at the very top level, as well as on the international stage.
His relationship with Danny Rohl is understandable, but it would be a huge surprise if they managed to pull off such a signing.
The German didn’t make a single appearance for Dortmund last season, however he is still surely way above the level of a Championship relegation scrap.
Reports also claim he was earning around £100,000-per-week in Bundesliga, so even a 50% pay cut to move to Hillsborough wouldn’t really work for him.
It is very promising the amount of talent that Rohl knows from his time in Germany though, and hopefully if he can keep Sheffield Wednesday up then he can bring in some more realistic, yet exciting, signings.
