Sheffield Wednesday are eying a move to sign Manchester United midfielder Charlie Savage. The Owls have only added one player to their ranks this summer and reinforcements are needed across the squad.
According to Football Insider, Savage is being considered by Wednesday as they go in search of new recruits. Championship outfit Swansea are also keen, with Wigan also in the mix to land him.
Savage is rated highly at Old Trafford. He was part of Erik ten Hag’s pre-season squad that faced Leeds in Norway, with the 20-year-old captaining the side during the second half.
The midfielder has a contract with United until 2025. At this stage, it’s not clear whether the Owls would be able to land him on loan or on a permanent deal this summer.
Savage spent the second half of last season on loan at Forest Green Rovers. He scored one goal from 15 appearances and was hailed as ‘incredible’ by their boss at the time Duncan Ferguson.
The talented youngster does have one senior appearance to his name at United. He played for the club as a very late substitute during a Champions League clash against Young Boys in 2021.
His chances of senior football do look quite bleak at United in the short term. As a result, it would seem as though they’re trying to get the youngster hooked up with some regular football next season.
Wednesday eyeing move for United youngster Savage
The son of Robbie Savage does look set to have a bright future in the game. He operates in the middle of the park and perhaps that’s an area where Wednesday could use some youthful exuberance.
It won’t be easy to land him though. Michael Duff is in place at Swansea and he has a decent recent history of getting the very best out of younger players as a manager.
Wednesday definitely need to crank up their recruitment drive. Reece James is the only permanent signing of the summer and Xisco Munoz will be desperate to get new players in.
Rumour rating: 6/10 – This might not be a bad signing, although Wednesday fans might have expected more glamourous additions under Munoz.
Still, Savage has bags of potential and perhaps he could thrive in a team that will try and play football on the front foot.
The jury would perhaps remain out for a few weeks if he did sign but right now it’s a case of needs must for Wednesday.
