Brian Laws has claimed that the pressure is on Sheffield Wednesday manager Xisco Munoz. The boos rang out around Hillsborough last night as the Owls were battered 3-0 by Sunderland.
It was a disaster of a performance by Wednesday. They fell a goal behind after just three minutes and found themselves 2-0 down after seven minutes of the contest.
The game was over as a spectacle on the half-hour mark. Jack Clarke scored his second of the night and fans began to leave the stadium in their droves.
Laws delivers verdict on Munoz pressure
What a nightmare this is turning out to be. Wednesday winning promotion was supposed to spark a momentum shift but since Darren Moore departed things have gone downhill.
Munoz cut a dejected figure during the contest. Clearly, the winless run of nine games isn’t good and he must be feeling the pressure to turn things around.
Laws suggested that he does have sympathy for the Wednesday manager given the current plight. However, he’s not immune to criticism and believes he is under stern pressure.
He told BBC Radio Sheffield: “Listen, common sense tells you that he’s not in a good position. I would never ever say that any manager should be shown the door, absolutely not.
“There are elements that have gone against him, acquisitions haven’t been good, he’s had injuries as well and he’s just not really put his plan in place quickly enough. But, the pressure just mounts and you’ve got to win games.”
The clock is ticking for Munoz
Last night’s result wasn’t the most concerning aspect of the evening. Losing 3-0 to a Sunderland team who will be fancied to compete for promotion is no real shocker.
However, it’s the manner of these defeats that is proving the most alarming aspect. Wednesday didn’t fight, they rarely competed and frankly, they rolled over and had their tummies tickled by the Black Cats.
Laws is right to be worried. He knows all about getting the old heave-ho from the managerial position at Wednesday and he will understand the pressure that comes with such a big job.
The man who played for Wednesday did prove a bit of a fan favourite with the Owls, however. Munoz doesn’t have such a luxury and the pressure has intensified following another defeat on home soil.
