It proved a real family affair for Sheffield Wednesday brothers Shea and Pierce Charles at the weekend as the duo started for Northern Ireland.

The pair were both named in the team by Michael O’Neill with Pierce earning rave reviews for his maiden performance on the international stage.

Shea joined his brother at Hillsborough on a season-long loan from Southampton during the summer transfer window and has caught the eye so far.

The talented player swapped the Premier League for Wednesday and Shea scored his first goal for the Owls in a 2-1 win over Coventry last time out.

The older of the two Charles brothers is a regular with the Northern Ireland senior ranks and has now made 17 appearances for his country.

On Saturday, he lined up alongside his brother and gave another good account of himself as O’Neill’s team drew 0-0 with Belarus.

Northern Ireland media deliver verdict on Sheffield Wednesday player Shea Charles

Danny Rohl hasn’t got much wrong when it comes to recruitment and once again, Charles looks like a very useful signing to the Wednesday ranks.

He’s started all six games that Wednesday have played since he arrived at the football club and the challenge for him is to continue playing well and keep his shirt.

Charles is also a regular on the international stage these days and on Saturday he was called upon for the entire game against Belarus.

The Belfast Telegraph gave him a 7/10 and claimed: “Always involved in setting the pace across an excellent first half for the Ulstermen, albeit one which could not yield a goal.”

Belfast Live also gave him a 7/10 delivering a short and sweet verdict which read: “Key player in first half but drifted out of it late on.”

Charles can be huge player for Wednesday this season

It’s intriguing that the national media have claimed that Charles dictated the tempo of the game as that’s exactly what he did for Wednesday against Coventry before the break.

The six games he’s played in central midfield for Wednesday have seen the Owls win twice, draw twice and lose twice with just the one goal coming from Charles.

It will probably be a big thing for the midfielder to come to Wednesday and spend a year playing alongside his brother which he’s probably not done for many years going back to their days as kids.

Charles doesn’t look like he’s going to be dropped by Rohl any time soon and Wednesday will be hoping that he can continue showing progress and stamp his authority on the team.

With Barry Bannan not getting any younger, Charles looks like the perfect midfield partner for him, with his youthful exuberance and ability to run all game there for all to see in his Owls displays so far.
