Sheffield Wednesday have ended their preseason campaign on a high this weekend.

The Owls had played out one win, two draws and a defeat before returning to Hillsborough for yesterday’s clash with Leganes.

It wasn’t just their final preseason match though, but also Liam Palmer’s testimonial.

The defender put pen to paper on a new contract this summer and is now preparing for another year with the club, but players and fans came together to celebrate his career before kicking off the new season.

Sheffield Wednesday battled it out in a 0-0 stalemate and were unable to beat Leganes to celebrate Palmer further, but it was a heartwarming afternoon either way.

Leganes congratulate ‘incredible’ Palmer

The Spanish club were quick to show their appreciation for the 32-year-old too, taking to Instagram to congratulate him.

They wrote: “Congratulations @liamjpalmer on your incredible career in the blue and white colors of Sheffield, and thank you @swfcofficial for your hospitality and for the invitation on such a special day, and best of luck during the season!”

Palmer’s testimonial was the perfect way to end preseason and, while celebrating him as a player, it should really boost the moral heading into next weekend’s opener.

Supporters are set to return to Hillsborough next week for the clash with Plymouth and will surely be in good spirits after such an enjoyable afternoon against Leganes.

Whether Palmer starts against the Pilgrims remains to be see, but the team will be extremely confident that they can kickstart the season with a big win.

Sheffield Wednesday have one obvious problem ahead of Plymouth opener

Wednesday picked up three points and a clean sheet against Plymouth earlier this year, and if they can add a couple of goals to that next week then it will really show the dramatic process they have made since.

Danny Rohl will be desperate to get a striker on board before that match though, with the club reportedly agreeing a £2.5m fee for Ike Ugbo.

The switch still doesn’t seem smooth though and it feels like there is the possibility that they will head into the game without a No.9, most likely forcing Jamal Lowe into that position.

Wednesday have plenty of options in their frontline now which is a huge relief, but missing a proper striker could have a significant impact.
