Emerging comments from Josh Windass on the Sheffield Wednesday style of play under Danny Rohl have caused some debate among supporters.
Sheffield Wednesday are venturing out of the UK for pre-season preparations in Austria and Germany this month.
Danny Rohl and his new-look Sheffield Wednesday first-team squad have games against Red Bull Salzburg and Werder Bremen before they take on Plymouth Argyle in their opening game of the 2024/25 Championship season.
Sheffield Wednesday fans are hopeful and excited for the new season. It’s Rohl’s first full season in charge and he’s signed nine new players, all of which are signings that have excited fans.
But Sheffield Wednesday supporters have reacted strongly to emerging comments from striker Josh Windass regarding the club’s playing style under Rohl next season.

What has Josh Windass said about Sheffield Wednesday playing style under Danny Rohl
Speaking to The Star, Windass gave his verdict on Sheffield Wednesday’s passing style of play, which focuses on working the ball out from the back.
Windass said: “When the fans get frustrated and say we’re having a bad game or we do lose the ball at the back, I think they’ve got to realise this is the way we’re going to play.
“I’m sure they’d prefer watching us do that then just booting balls up the pitch and not having any idea what we’re doing.
“If they can see it working first and foremost, that’s important. If we’re getting beaten five and six then obviously it’s a problem.”
Passing out from the back caused a few issues for Sheffield Wednesday last season, with perhaps the only criticism of Rohl being his persistence in playing such a way when Sheffield Wednesday were struggling.
Ultimately though, he got the job done and steered Sheffield Wednesday to safety.
Sheffield Wednesday fans react to Josh Windass comments
Perhaps as expected, Sheffield Wednesday fans had plenty to say on Windass’ comments and on the style of play in general.
One fan said: “Not only us but the majority of clubs cannot play from the back and it causes more goals against.”
In games against Norwich City and Leicester City in particular, Sheffield Wednesday conceded goals when they tried to play out from the back.
Sheffield Wednesday fans believe the club needs better-suited players for the style of play, with one saying: “I’m OK with it generally it’s just that you need to be pretty decent at the back to do it and last season we simply wasn’t.”
Another added: “I am OK with them playing it from the back, as long as we have the players to do it and are good enough.”
Sheffield Wednesday fans have total faith and trust in Rohl, though, and they’re confident that he’ll change things for the better if this style of play doesn’t pan out as expected next season.
One fan said: “People forget that if it doesn’t work then Danny will change that,” and another added: “I think we all agree to embrace it but also expect him [Rohl] to switch it up when it isn’t working.”
On the whole, it seems like Sheffield Wednesday fans want to see attractive football next season, which is obvious, but Rohl also needs to work to the quality of players he has, especially at the centre-back where Sheffield Wednesday are particularly light at the moment.
