Sheffield Wednesday player John Buckley has explained what Danny Rohl is expecting from his players. The Owls were beaten 1-0 by Watford in the German’s first game in charge on Saturday.
The burgeoning coach has been handed the managerial position at Wednesday. He’s replaced Xisco Munoz who was sacked after just a few months in charge.
Rohl has a huge challenge ahead of him. Wednesday are without a victory in the Championship this season and they were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Mansfield Town.
Buckley explains what Wednesday boss wants from his players
Buckley has shown some flashes of brilliance during his time at Wednesday. Regular game time is a must for the player and he’s certainly getting that at Hillsborough.
The 24-year-old typically operates in midfield. He’s enjoying working with the manager and he’s been explaining what he’s asked of his players since he arrived.
He told The Star: “Each manager is different, styles of play and things like that. But, yeah all the lads have bought into it so far. I thought our pressing was good today, we got the crowd against them which was what we wanted to try and do. It’s just a shame we didn’t come away with anything.
“He wants us to be intensive, be composed on the ball, have good connections with each and he wants us to trust each other on the ball and not just kicking it forward.
“If we keep playing like that I feel like we’ll be able to pick up points, there’s no doubt about that.”
Buckley can kick on under new Wednesday boss
The talented player wasn’t getting much game time under Jon Dahl Tomasson at Blackburn and subsequently joined Wednesday. He’s now trying to showcase his quality and he is growing with the Owls.
It’s quite intriguing what Rohl has asked his players to do. There seems to be a real desire to get Wednesday moving the ball forward quicker and actually picking passes rather than going long.
There are some desperately big games coming up for Wednesday. A win would change the landscape completely and give the team some belief that they can get out of this sticky situation.
