Oscar Garcia is one name to scrub off the list as a candidate for the vacant Sheffield Wednesday job. The 50-year-old is now set for talks with other clubs as he bids to return to management.
News emerged last week that Garcia was on the shortlist of Dejphon Chansiri who needs a replacement for Xisco Munoz. Now, Yorkshire Live believe that Bordeaux are keen on Garcia.
Munoz was replaced by Neil Thompson on a caretaker basis last week. The interim manager oversaw a 0-0 draw with Huddersfield at the weekend as Wednesday remain winless in the Championship.
Garcia out of Wednesday running
Another failed Watford manager would hardly have been exciting from a Wednesday perspective. Ultimately, the club have to get this next appointment right and Garcia would have been a risk.
The experienced manager is currently out of work so wouldn’t have commanded a compensation package to a club. That would naturally make him attractive to Chansiri at the least.
Garcia has managed a number of clubs during his career. His last role came at Reims where he oversaw just 14 victories in 51 matches and was sacked in October of last year.
In England, he’s had limited success. He had a 39% win ratio from his 53 matches in charge of Brighton; whilst he he won just one of the four matches he spent overseeing the fortunes of Watford.
Wednesday right not to pursue manager
This has to be viewed as positive news. Wednesday need someone who will be hungry to prove a point and Garcia is nothing more than a journeyman manager at this stage.
He has won titles in Austria and Israel. However, it’s hard to compare those leagues to the demands of the Championship and Wednesday can’t afford to get the next decision wrong.
If Wednesday do go for someone who is unknown it needs to be a head coach type who can bring modern-day methods to the club. Garcia doesn’t fit that criteria and the Owls are wise to steer clear of this one.
