Sheffield Wednesday host Coventry City in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday night, and the winner of the match will pocket a tidy six-figure sum.
Sheffield Wednesday are back at Hillsborough again on Friday, and again hosting Coventry City after the two teams met in the Championship last weekend.
That game ended in a 2-1 win for the Sky Blues who continue on their fine vein of form in the second tier.
The Owls meanwhile dropped back down to 23rd after QPR beat Millwall, with the gap to Huddersfield Town in 21st reopening to five points.
It may be a welcome break from league duties for Danny Rohl and his players then, with a win on Friday able to pocket his team an equally welcome windfall.
Sheffield Wednesday in line for £120,000 cash boost
As per the FA’s official website, both Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City have each pocketed £105,000 for their third round wins over Cardiff City and Oxford United respectively.
And fourth round winners each earn £120,000.
So for Sheffield Wednesday who’ve had quite widely reported financial troubles over the past year at least, making progress in the cup seems vital.
And it also presents a vital opportunity for Rohl to give game time to some lesser-seen players and to some of the club’s younger prospects as well.
Danny Rohl could field another strong Owls XI on Friday
Not only is there a timely cash windfall up for grabs on Friday, but Rohl will also be keen to get some momentum back into the side after back-to-back defeats in the league.
Against Cardiff in the third round, Rohl surprised many by naming a very strong XI, and his side went on to win 4-0 at Hillsborough.
Expect Coventry to field another strong XI for the same reasons, but expect there to be some changes, and given the fact that Wednesday put in a good performance against Coventry, there’s every hope that the Owls progress into the fifth round.
Sheffield Wednesday haven’t been in the fifth round since the 2017/18 seasons when they were knocked out after a replay with Swansea City, and the Owls haven’t reached the quarter-finals since the 1996/97 campaign.
Expect much of the focus right now to be on the transfer market with Sheffield Wednesday clearly failing to get as much done as they’d have hoped for by now.
But this potential six-figure windfall could really help in terms of transfers, so expect a lot of focus to be on earning a win on Friday too.
