Former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper David Stockdale shared a funny story ahead of the game against Leeds United on Friday night.
Sheffield Wednesday welcomed Leeds United to Hillsborough last Friday night.
But Leeds United won 2-0 to bring an end to the Owls’ four-game winning streak, despite the best efforts of Danny Rohl‘s side.
Djeidi Gassama had Wednesday’s best chance of the game but was left ‘baffled’ by a superb Illan Meslier save.
The Owls remain in 23rd place of the Championship table and now have a one-point gap to safety, with nine games of the season left to play.
David Stockdale visits Sheffield Wednesday for Leeds United clash
Former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Stockdale was in attendance on Friday night.
The Leeds-born shot-stopper, who currently plays for York City in the National League, featured 24 times for Wednesday in League One before being released ahead of this season.
And speaking ahead of the game against Leeds, Stockdale revealed the camaraderie with his family whilst he was playing for Sheffield Wednesday, saying:
“Being from the place over there, the other team [Leeds]. My family are all like that, so even last year I was still getting booed in my own house at Christmas dinner.”
A bitter rivalry
Wednesday are quit blessed in that they have plenty of rivals in and around them, giving fans plenty of memorable days and nights out.
And Stockdale’s story sums up the rivalry between Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday, though on Friday there was only going to be one winner.
Wednesday put up a good fight but couldn’t cope with the sheer quality of the Leeds XI, with Daniel Farke then able to call on names like Joel Piroe on the bench.
But thankfully, the Owls won all the games they needed to going into that Leeds game, and then this weekend’s trip to Ipswich Town.
Games against Millwall, Rotherham United, and Plymouth were absolute must-wins and now the Owls have set themselves up for a real survival push in the final nine games of the season.
Wednesday will be expected to succumb to defeat once again this weekend, but if they can take a point then it would certainly be a huge result for them.
Crunch games follow; Sheffield Wednesday return to Hillsborough against Swansea City, then travel to Middlesbrough and QPR.
Kick off vs Ipswich Town this weekend is at 3pm.
