Sheffield Wednesday full back Marvin Johnson made his first appearance in a Wednesday shirt on Tuesday afternoon, starting for the under-21s.
He played 45 minutes for Neil Thompson’s side away at Coventry City, in a game which they won 4-0. He was substituted at the break for Sam Reed.
Goals from Sean Fusire, Bailey Cadamarteri and a brace from Luke Cook secured the victory for the young Owls.
The win took Wednesday to within four points of rivals Sheffield United in the Professional Development League.
Wednesday’s under-21s have only lost once this season, as they look to bounce back after a tough 2022-23 campaign.
Good to see Johnson back in the fold
This was Johnson’s first appearance in an Owls shirt since pre-season, after he was frozen out by former manager Xisco Munoz.
Since the Spaniard’s sacking, Johnson has slowly been brought back into the fold by the newly appointed Danny Rohl, who is zero to give him a chance in the first team.
Johnson will not be able to feature for the first team in the league though until January, as he was not included in the squad list submitted to the EFL last month.
But he will be looking to force his way into Rohl’s plans by then, making sure he is fit for his return.
Rohl has addressed the drama surrounding Johnson, speaking about it ahead of the loss to Watford. He told Yorkshire Live: “I had a good conversation with Marvin and I spoke about what I expect from him on and off the pitch. We took him into training and we’ll look at the data and if it’s right we’ll decide whether to bring him back into the squad.”
