Many came and went during Darren Moore’s two-year spell at Sheffield Wednesday.
And it was a two years dotted with highs and lows.
Moore oversaw Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation from the Championship in 2021 and then guided the Owls to promotion from League One last season.
He left unexpectedly at the start of the summer, kick-starting a chain of rather catastrophic events for Sheffield Wednesday who now find themselves in last place of the table.
Moore has since taken on the Huddersfield Town job.
Matt Penney released during Moore’s early reign
Moore was appointed in March 2021.
His immediate task was to steer the club clear of relegation, and although he failed to do that, he was kept in charge going into League One.
A summer of change within the playing staff followed with one player being released at the end of the 2020/21 season being Matt Penney.
The Chesterfield-born full-back rose through the ranks at Sheffield Wednesday and went on to make 32 first-team appearances before his release.
He then spent a further two years with Ipswich Town, helping the club to promotion from League One last season, but being released in the summer.
What is Penney up to now?
Since his summer release, Penney has yet to find a new club. And now aged 25, it remains to be seen whether or not he returns to the game.
Breaking through at Wednesday, Penney looked like he’d go on to become a really exciting player for the club, and he certainly showed glimpses during his breakthrough 2018/19 season where he made 16 Championship appearances under Jos Luhukay and then Steve Bruce.
But the changes in managers and styles won’t have helped his cause, and he struggled to kick on in loan spells with the likes of Bradford City and Mansfield Town, but impressed with St Pauli in Germany.
The case was largely the same at Ipswich with Penney making 22 League One appearances in his first season at the club, but then being shipped out on loan.
It’s surprising to see him still without a club given his previous potential, but at the same time, it’s always hard for released players to find the next best club for them.
Penney may well be biding his time and waiting for the right opportunity, with a move abroad or to a lower league side looking like a good potential option for Penney.
