'Come home': Sheffield Wednesday fans react to Matt Penney's Hamburg derby heroics

The loaned-out Sheffield Wednesday wing-back Matt Penney scored his first professional goal on Saturday.

It arrived at the 31st time of asking and in some style – a well-struck 20-yarder which rifled into the bottom corner, and was befitting of the occasion – Hamburg derby in front of 57,000 spectators.

Penney’s effort ensured a 2-0 win for St Pauli, the unfancied visitors who had been operating at the opposite end of the German second tier to their title-chasing hosts, Hamburg SV.

Despite having made the move to Lower Saxony at the end of August, in doing so reuniting with his former manager at Wednesday, Jos Luhukay, Penney had appeared on just 10 occasions for St Pauli prior to his latest outing.

And it was only his second start since the end of October, owing mostly to an injury which convinced the Owls boss Garry Monk not to recall the Middlewood Road product earlier than planned in January.

Penney cannot now return to Wednesday – at least not to play at first-team level – until the summer transfer window.

And with his Owls deal also just months away from expiry, it is possible that the Chesterfield native won’t ever be seen again in Blue and White.

But many Wednesday fans, including some of the following, will hope that’s not the case…
